 | | Construction of a permeable Reactive Barrier at Shilbottle Colliery, Northumberland. client: Northumberland County Council | value: £82,000 contract date: 2002 This contract included the improvement of a passive wetland system which had been put in place to improve water quality of run off from the former colliery spoil heap. A section of the Tyelaw Burn was relocated and a Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) was installed to treat surface water before reaching the burn. The contract involved the use of innovative remediation techniques and working closely with the research programme at Newcastle University. The PRB was constructed via the excavation of trenches followed by placement of the reactive media (permeable filter drainage composite). This was then capped with 300mm compacted clay to provide the correct anaerobic conditions. Soils were re-spread, and cultivation took place involving amenity grass mix and assorted trees and shrubs. | |
