Case Study - Permeable Reactive Barrier, Shilbottle Colliery
Reclamation of former engineering works, Park Road Consett

Client:
Barratt Newcastle | Value: £1.5million | Contract Date: 2003

This is a Design and Construct Reclamation contract for the former Consett Steelworks for Barratt Newcastle to provide a development platform suitable for the construction of residential properties. Site investigations showed the site to be contaminated with limited mobility metals and sulphates with the potential for hydrocarbon contaminated hotspots.

The scheme also involved a continuous, close chemical and physical testing regime to identify any potential contamination from the former steelworks.
The emphasis on the project was to recycle excavated material via screening, processing and crushing to produce aggregates for re-use in the reclamation works and subsequent roads & sewers works.

Works included:

Demolition of massive reinforced concrete structures
above and below ground

Excavation of Made ground

Sorting and processing of arisings allowing remediation / segregation of contaminants, provision of adequate ‘clean cover’ to residential gardens

Installation of surface water protection measures, along with engineering works to mitigate expansion potential associated with slag deposits including importation of granular material

Hellens Contracts employed White Young Green Environmental Limited to supervise the site remediation strategy. Works are to be phased across the site to allow early release of land so that plot construction can begin.
