 |  | Site clearance and reclamation of Paradise Tip.  client: Wear Valley District Council | value: £1.8m contract date: 2000-02  The site involved was a former British Rail Tip which had been used for the disposal of spent ballast and rolling stock 'strip down' arisings. Contamination on the site was mainly due to the presence of asbestos and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). The contract spanned 24 calendar months.  More specifically works involved:  Site clearance involving the removal of surface debris and excavation of concrete railway platform structures  Excavation and filling of 180,000m³ of tipped material under strict hygiene conditions  Regrading and re-compaction to remove unstable slopes  Removal of hydrocarbon contamination and capping of phytotoxic contamination  Capping of the whole re-graded tip with use of a brightly coloured geogrid as a warning layer and physical barrier  The site was restored for recreational use with grass seeding, landscaping and public access provision being carried out. | |
