Construction of transit sheds and provision of associated road infrastructure - Port of Sunderland.

Hellens worked on this contract with consultant engineers Davies Tindale Associates. The works comprised the construction of a 13,000m² transit shed, associated road infrastructure and weighbridge facility within the Port of Sunderland. An important aspect of the work was the maintenance of a public through route at all times during construction to ensure access to the port buildings.

Specific activities included:

Diversion of private sewer and all statutory services.

Private road and car parking facilities
constructed in modular block paving (Eskoo).

Ground stabilisation using needle punch band-drains.

Construction of fully automated weighbridge
facility including serviced control room.

Ground surcharge techniques using reclaimed
and imported granular material.

Construction of complex reinforced concrete ring
beam complete with insitu holding down bolts.

Location and dilution of contaminated soils.
