 |  | Hawthorn Colliery Reclamation Phase III, Murton County Durham  Client: One NorthEast | Value: £2.1 million | Contract Date: 2002-2003  The 70 hectare site was reclaimed using varying depths of glacial tills overlying buried shales and made ground. The proposed end composition included establishment of woodland and grassland with footpaths & cycleway links across the site along with engineering works to the existing highway and access road. Work items included:  Amelioration of glacial till with thermally dried sewage sludge bio-pellets to improve nutrient and organic content  Boundary water course management including monitoring of water discharge quality & liaison with Environment Agency  Establishment of 32 hectares of wild flower meadow and open space grassland  26 hectares of woodland and wood margin planting, plant protection and protective fencing  Establishment of aquatic and marginal planting to water bodies  Surface water drainage and improved highway drainage systems  Construction of granular footpaths and bridleways along with a cycleway network across the site  | |
