Company HistoryKey Clients

Initially the Company operated as a reclamation contractor on derelict colliery and steel work sites. A complete redevelopment service was provided, from site clearance and bulk earthworks through to finishing works such as civil engineering, infrastructure plus hard and soft landscaping. These projects were invariably geared to provide improved public open space. A natural progression for Hellens Contracts was a specialisation towards grass seeding and tree planting, to supplement core construction activities.

Subsequently the region's regeneration programme shifted in focus to more urban locations, particularly along river corridors. Provision of areas for industrial and commercial development became the emphasis for the end use of sites. Hellens Contracts responded to this shift in demand with an expansion of its civil engineering activities namely, road and sewer works, service infrastructure, river and coastal protection and environmental improvements. Complete redevelopment of sites has also meant that the Company has gained considerable experience in dealing with contaminated sites with a variety of remediation techniques being employed, depending on site specific conditions and contaminants involved.

Hellens has consolidated its position over the last decade, responding adeptly to the shifting demands of its client base, primarily dictated by changes in government strategy. Clients now include a wide range of local authorities, government bodies such as development agencies as well as a number of key private clients, including house builders and property developers.
